That leaves many patients with braces wondering what to do next. Your orthodontist can always be contacted in the event of an emergency, but how can you ensure that your treatment stays on track during this time? Keep reading to learn some easy yet vital tips on how to maintain your braces from your emergency orthodontist in Newark.

It All Starts with Clean Braces

It’s more important than ever to brush your teeth at least 3 times a day to go with your main meals. You should also floss once a day to remove food debris and plaque that can get caught in between. This will help you avoid problems like decay and infection for stellar orthodontic health.

Follow Your Orthodontist’s Instructions

Without regular check-in visits, it’s more important than ever to follow the directions your orthodontist gave you. This means wearing any rubber bands, elastics, or other attachments that have been prescribed. Failing to do so can impact your oral health and treatment time.

Avoid Foods Bad for Braces

Now is not the time to experiment with what you can and can’t eat with braces. It’s in your best interest to avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods because they could damage your orthodontics. However, by skipping these foods you can keep your brackets and wires safely fastened to your smile to work their magic.

Orthodontic Wax is Your New Best Friend

Without your orthodontist just a quick and easy visit away, you may find yourself in discomfort from poking wires. These can cut or catch the inside of your mouth, but you can use orthodontic wax to smooth them out. This makes it much more comfortable to smile! If you don’t have orthodontic wax already, contact your local drugstore to see if they have it. You may even be able to pick it up curbside!

What if You’re Using Clear Aligners?

If you have clear aligners, be extra careful not to break. During cleaning, put down towels on the sink and floor to break their fall if you drop them. In order to maintain their appearance and function, clean your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush, water, and clear hand soap. Be sure to avoid using hot water because it can permanently warp the plastic. If you finish your treatment while your orthodontist is closed, continue to wear the last aligners in the series until you can get an appointment.

Caring for your braces doesn’t have to be difficult! Remember these helpful tips and use your time during quarantine wisely by maintaining your braces.
