Why There are 2 Phases of Orthodontic Care

November 12, 2017

young boy with bracesIn recent years, early orthodontics have taken off, and you’re likely to see more and more young kids with braces or retainers. Many parents ask us about two phase orthodontic treatment, but easily the most frequently asked question about two phase orthodontics is, “Does my child need this treatment?” The answer is maybe. Keep reading to find out more about two phase orthodontic treatments and when to consider scheduling a consultation for your child.

What is Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Phase one orthodontics, as the name suggests is the first part of a multiphase smile alignment plan. Rather than waiting for baby teeth to fall out and adult teeth to replace them before beginning treatment, phase one orthodontics addresses bite alignment concerns starting with baby teeth. Using traditional brackets and wires, phase one adjusts the primary teeth. The main purpose of primary teeth is to prepare the way for adult teeth to develop and erupt, so phase one orthodontic treatment is completed in hopes that permanent teeth will erupt in a position closer to their ideal placement.

Who Should Consider Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Phase one orthodontics have really taken off, but they are truly not the right option for every patient. We will typically only recommend these treatments for young patients who have serious, class II, malocclusion. This includes young people with severe over, under, and crossbite. Phase one orthodontics are typically recommended if your child has difficulty eating, speaking, breathing, or performing other daily functions due to their misaligned teeth.

Will Kids Still Need Phase 2 Orthodontics?

Yes, they will. Following the completion of phase one orthodontics, kids will need to wear a retainer until their permanent teeth erupt. Then, they will need to undergo traditional orthodontic treatment. The hope is that this second phase of treatment will take less time due to the completion of phase one treatment, but the research is unclear regarding whether or not this is the case. That’s why we typically only encourage kids to undergo phase one treatment if their malocclusion adversely affects their abilities to lead healthy lives.

What’s Right for My Child?

Every patient is different and their orthodontic treatment plans will be too. The only way to know what the right treatment plan is for your child is to schedule a consultation with a trusted orthodontist. They will evaluate your child’s smile, and help your family determine what treatment plan is best.
