Orthodontics Treatment for Kids

As your trusted Heath and Mount Vernon orthodontist for kids, we’re proud to provide comprehensive and high-quality orthodontic care for patients, no matter their age. We strive to offer a warm and friendly environment that’s welcome for even the youngest of patients. We’ll do everything we can to make sure that your child is completely comfortable in his or her visit because an early screening is highly important to a child’s oral health.

The Recommended Time for a Screening

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child’s first visit to the orthodontist is at the age of seven. The reason for this is because by the age of seven, the first adult molars erupt and establish the back bite. This allows us to evaluate a child’s front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. We’ll be able to check for possible overbites, open bites, crowding and spacing issues, gummy smiles, and other problems. Timely screening will increase the chance of a healthy smile.

It’s also important to note that an early screening doesn’t necessarily mean early treatment. An early evaluation provides both a timely detection of problems along with a greater opportunity for a more effective treatment. Even in many situations when orthodontic treatment isn’t immediately necessary, we can use this time to monitor your child’s growth and development in order to start the process when it’s most opportune.

What Are the Advantages of Early Treatment?

Some of the biggest advantages of early treatment are that it can:

  • Create room and preserve space for erupting teeth
  • Create facial symmetry by promoting jaw growth
  • Prevent malocclusions such as crossbite and openbite
  • Reduce the risk of chipping or trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Reduce the need for tooth removal
  • Reduce treatment time with braces

How Long Will Orthodontic Treatment Last?

Because the severity of the case will vary from patient to patient, there’s no certain answer to this question. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment will begin by having the appliances placed. After this, there will be scheduled follow-up appointments with adjustments. When the appliances are finally removed, there will be a retention phase in order to make sure the teeth keep their alignment. Typically, this entire process will last for approximately two years.
